Letter From Lu

from Other Short Stories (Abridged) by Atheists

lyrics

Last night I had a dream
That I got a letter from you
Which is impossible
But it made sense
It was true

“Dearest friend,
I know you had to do it
In order for us both to survive
But not a day goes by
I don’t think I see your face
In the sunrise light
Beyond the fence”

It went on for a page or two
It was handwritten
I slumped onto the floor
Clutching it tight
In my chilly Ketchikan kitchen

“Dearest friend,
I know you had to do it
It was a difficult gesture of love
But not a night goes by
I don’t think I see your face
In the sunset light
Beyond the fence

And when you read this
I want you to know
That I am all right
She loves me just like you did
Well, maybe not quite
(But who could ever?)

Dearest friend,
I know you had to do it
In the piercing light
Beyond the fence

I look for you
I love you
Even if that train choir
Never brings you
Back here again”

I woke up and stiffened
At the lack of your body
At your missing
At the shape of air
Where you should be
